What is a GTM engineer? Hire, train or outsource

What a GTM engineer does, the skills and salary involved, and when to hire one, train someone in-house or bring in a GTM agency instead.

Dag Holmen · Updated · 6 min read

A GTM engineer builds the systems that find, enrich, score and route buyers for sales and marketing: data workflows in tools like Clay, CRM plumbing, signal alerts and outbound sequences. In the US, 2026 job postings put the median salary at about $150,000 to $159,000.

You don’t always need to hire one. Hire when you have ongoing workflows to build and run. Train someone when you have a curious operator who likes building. Bring in a GTM agency when you need one defined outcome, like a mapped market, without adding headcount.

What is a GTM engineer?

GTM stands for go-to-market. A go-to-market engineer applies an engineer’s habits to revenue work: find the bottleneck, build a fix, measure it, keep what works.

Clay, the tool most GTM engineer job postings ask for, describes GTM engineers in its April 2026 guide as acting “like an internal product team” for the GTM organization. Their job is to spot where pipeline gets stuck, write a spec, ship a prototype and scale what works.

That makes it different from classic sales ops. Sales ops keeps the CRM clean and the reports running. A GTM engineer builds new plays: a workflow that flags when a past champion starts a new job, or one that tells a rep which accounts researched a competitor this week. Clay notes that many companies start GTM engineers inside RevOps, because RevOps already owns the data pipelines.

What a GTM engineer does day to day

Clay’s guide lists projects like these:

  • Inbound routing that scores new sign-ups and drafts the follow-up.
  • A daily Slack digest of account signals so reps can prep for calls.
  • CRM fields filled in from call transcripts instead of by hand.
  • Alerts when an enterprise customer asks for a feature before renewal.

Then there’s the list work most teams hire for first. That means mapping the total addressable market, turning an ideal customer profile into search filters, running enrichment waterfalls across data providers, verifying emails and scoring accounts. It’s the most common first project because every other workflow depends on having the right companies and people in the CRM.

The difference matters when you decide how to staff it. Inbound routing and signal alerts run every day and need an owner. A TAM map is a project with an end date.

GTM engineer skills

The role is part builder, part commercial thinker. OnFire’s analysis of 209 GTM engineer job postings (August 2026) shows what companies ask for:

Skill or toolShare of postings
AI and LLM experience95%
Clay66%
SQL, Python or JavaScript56%
HubSpot50%
Salesforce48%
n8n41%
Zapier40%

Clay shows up in two of every three postings, more than any CRM. Clay’s own hiring advice puts attitude ahead of the stack: technical fluency, a commercial bias, curiosity and an experimental mindset. It says the real signal is a willingness to learn by tinkering, and that some of its best hires came straight from its own customer base. Its guide mentions people who moved into the role from RevOps, sales and product design.

So the person you’re looking for understands why a list matters to a rep, and can also debug why an enrichment step returned nothing for 30% of rows.

GTM engineer salary

Two 2026 datasets, both built from US job postings that disclose pay:

  • Cargo read the GTM engineer postings on its job board from April to July 2026. Across 509 postings with a salary, the median was $159,000, with the middle half between $135,000 and $190,000. Mid-level roles sat at $155,000, senior at $175,000 and staff at $219,000. Fully remote roles were lower, at $147,500.
  • RevGuild, with data from Glozo, looked at 190 US vacancies from June 2025 to June 2026, of which 71 disclosed pay. Its median base salary was $150,000, from $113,000 for entry level to $188,000 for senior roles. New York ($170,000) and California ($165,000) paid the most.

Only about a quarter of postings state pay, so treat both as the visible slice of the market, not a survey.

Salary isn’t the whole cost. In private industry, wages are 70% of what employers spend on compensation, per the Bureau of Labor Statistics (June 2026). A $159,000 salary is closer to $227,000 a year once benefits are in. Add the tools the person will run: Clay’s Growth plan starts at $446 a month billed annually, before extra credits (see the Clay pricing guide).

GTM engineer jobs: what hiring looks like

Almost every opening is a full-time role. In RevGuild’s data, 96.4% of postings were full-time, with contract and part-time work barely showing up. That fits the job: the value comes from workflows that keep running, and someone has to own them.

It also means a small team can find itself paying for a full-time hire to solve what is, right now, a one-time problem. Before you open a role, write down the first three projects. If they’re all list-building, you may be hiring for a project.

Hire, train or bring in a GTM agency

Hire

Hire when the work is continuous. If you have inbound volume to route, several signal sources to act on and a CRM that needs enriching every day, that’s a full-time job, and it’s worth hiring for. Give them a clear first project and a tool budget.

Train

Training works when you already have the right person. Clay University’s cohorts are free to join and run for one week at about 3 to 4 hours a day. A RevOps manager or growth marketer with a week of focused time can start building real workflows. The catch is time: the hours they spend building come out of their current job.

Bring in a GTM agency

A GTM agency (often called a Clay agency, when that’s their main tool) builds for you. Clay’s Solutions Partner Directory lists 189 consultancies and freelancers, sorted by tier and expertise, and Clay will match you with one. On Upwork, Clay experts generally charge $13 to $45 an hour, and list builds are quoted from $100 to $1,000 per project. Experienced US contractors cost more: one fractional GTM engineer role posted in Clay’s community in June 2026 paid $80 to $90 an hour.

Agencies vary a lot. Some run outbound on a monthly retainer. Some build systems in your stack and hand them over. Some deliver one defined asset. Ask which one you’re buying.

AdsGTM: one managed-service option

AdsGTM is a GTM agency that does one job as a fixed service: it maps your whole market. You get every ICP-fit company and buyer, with LinkedIn URLs, verified work emails and optional phone numbers. Every company is scored, and the list is split into Sales-ready (contacts at companies showing buying intent now, usually around 5%) and Marketing-ready (the rest of your market).

It’s a one-time price, from $2,900 for up to 50,000 contacts (see pricing). It starts with a 30-minute kickoff call, and delivery to HubSpot, Salesforce, Attio or CSV comes within 72 hours. Three revisions are included, and our team stays in a shared Slack channel for 12 months. Hey Digital, the agency we built a 12,000-contact list with for its client Alia Popups, put it this way: “You turned that around way faster than some GTM engineers told us they could.”

What it doesn’t do is run your daily workflows. Inbound routing, signal alerts and outbound sequences are still a GTM engineer’s job, or your team’s. You can do both: get the market mapped first, then hire or train someone to work it. The cost guide compares the in-house numbers line by line, and how AdsGTM works covers the process. If you’re choosing tools for an in-house build, start with Clay vs Apollo vs ZoomInfo.

Frequently asked questions

What is GTM engineering?
GTM engineering is building the systems behind go-to-market: data workflows, enrichment, scoring, routing and signal alerts that help sales and marketing reach the right buyers. It treats revenue problems the way a product team treats product problems.
Do GTM engineers need to code?
Often, but not always. OnFire’s August 2026 analysis found 56% of postings ask for SQL, Python or JavaScript. Clay says a willingness to learn by tinkering matters more than a computer science background.
Is a GTM engineer the same as RevOps?
No. RevOps keeps systems, data and reporting running. A GTM engineer builds new workflows and plays on top of them. Many companies start the role inside RevOps because RevOps already owns the data.
What is a Clay agency?
A Clay agency is a consultancy that builds Clay workflows for clients, such as list building, enrichment and outbound systems. Clay lists 189 consultancies and freelancers in its Solutions Partner Directory.
How long does it take to learn Clay?
Clay University’s cohorts run for one week at about 3 to 4 hours a day and are free to join. Getting good at real builds takes longer, because most of the skill is in handling messy data.
Should a startup hire a GTM engineer?
Hire when you have ongoing workflows to build and run. If your first projects are all one-off list builds, train someone you already have or bring in an agency, and hire once the work is continuous.
